Summer - Autumn & Beyond
Here in the UK we are currently experiencing an Indian Summer heatwave, but our stores and social media have switched to full on autumn mode – it’s very confusing! With the unseasonal hot weather it may feel too soon to start thinking about an autumn wardrobe – it isn’t! Regardless of the temperature, brands and stores don’t wait until it’s cold to sell winter clothing. This year I was asked for warm coats in an unseasonably chilly July. A brief I couldn’t fulfil as a full range of coats don’t appear until September and are are only sold up to mid February. If you are in need of a coat or similar don’t wait for the right weather, the key is to invest when there are plenty to choose from.
Having said that scroll down for perennial pieces that slot perfectly into this years into the ‘quiet luxury’ theme, you can buy now and wear all year round for years to come.
A shirt - white or stripey
The classic shirt always a staple and currently have a fashion moment, meaning there are white or stripey styles for all to choose. Wear with denim shorts and sandals, or over a bikini at the beach for hotter days. Pair with wide leg trousers/jeans for when temperatures cool and a slightly oversize shirt will still look great when worn with leather leggings and chunky boots for when its freezing.
Ballet Flats
The perennial ballet flat, again a style that never really goes away. Wear with jeans, wide leg trousers and shorts and pointy styles look great with dresses. If you are like me, with one foot half a size bigger than the other opt for a style with a strap (Mary Jane style) or some sort of fastening. It’s tres chic, when both shoes stay on your feet!
Slip Skirt
The very versatile slip skirt is here to stay. Pair with a vest and sandals for hot casual days, strappy heels and a blazer for smarter looks and with boots and a jumper for colder temperatures. Try in easy black or opt for a jewel tone or champagne colouring to make a statement.
WIDEr leg Trousers
Wider leg trousers contrary to popular opinion do suit everyone, it’s all about getting the right width and waist detailing to suit your body-shape, taste and budget. If you have wider hips or a prominent tummy, avoid waist detailing like pleats and opt for flat front styles. Those with a wide hip to waist gap will find elasticated back waistbands or those with adjusters a better fit. If you are 5’3 (all clothing sizes) or under opt for a petite range where possible. Wear with a tee and sandals now and trainers and a jumper in winter.
