It’s All In The Layers
There is an art to mastering dressing stylishly when the seasons transition, as it can be several different weather types in one day. Layering and well chosen footwear are key. Layering allows your look good in chilly mornings, to when temperatures climb in the afternoon, then back again to cooler evenings. The key is to be clever with your layering, so you don’t end up carting half your wardrobe around with you.
Here are some transitional personal styling tips to get you started.
Footwear
Whilst sandal wearing days are now few and far between and it’s not chilly enough to break out the chunky boots. Opt for a mule instead - Boston Birkenstocks are my favourite, but I concede they are an acquired taste – so try a loafer, flat pump or a white trainer instead. Due to the copious amounts of rain at the moment go for leather/vegan leather options and save the canvas for spring.
Jackets
Blazers, blazers, blazers are everywhere at the moment and it seems to be the only thing Zara is selling this season. They make great transitional jackets and go with everything from jeans, to parachute pants, to dresses of all lengths. If you are though looking for a casual alternative, try the utility jacket or shacked, which has the added advantage of when thrown into a bag, still looking the part when you pull it out and put it on again.
Knits
Knits, from sweaters, to cardigans, to sweater vests (tank tops if you are a certain vintage) effortlessly pair with pretty much anything and can be easily folded away into a bag. Make sure your knits are on the lighter side and not of the heavy chunky fisherman variety. They are not of course waterproof, so remember to pack an umbrella.
Midi Dresses
Midi dresses will still give you that summer feeling, but will crucially provide just that extra coverage you’ll appreciate if the weather takes a turn for the worse. Plus, they are super easy to layer, with cardigans, blazers, utility jackets and shackets, belted or unbelted depending on your preference.
