How to Dress Like You’re in Charge - Even When You Aren’t!
Dressing with impact
Put Together Styling
Lately, I’ve been drawing more and more from my own experiences in the fashion industry to convey that looking put together matters. Whether you're in leadership or working toward it, how you present yourself shapes perceptions. From creative industries to corporate finance, your image can influence how others initially respond to you.
One such anecdote is from my time as a freelance fashion designer on a work trip to Istanbul. As part of the itinerary, I was to spend a day visiting prospective clothing manufacturers with a newly promoted far senior colleague. When we arrived at the first factory the owner immediately approached me first to shake my hand my hand, this then happened again at the next factory.
Why? Because people rely on visual cues, and in this case I was the person who looked more put together. As the day went on, I started physically stepping back as we arrived. To make sure my colleague got the attention she deserved, and I didn’t get my contract cancelled!
The experience really drove home a simple truth, how you present yourself influences perceptions. No matter your industry, below are four inspiration categories that will set you on the path to elevate your style and help you dress for success.
Colour
Using colour and flattering colour combinations to stand out can instantly elevate your look, signaling confidence, authority, and a strong personal brand. However, before embracing bold hues, it's essential to understand which shades compliment your overall complexion. A colour analysis can help you identify your most flattering colours, whether they are warm, cool, deep, or soft or a mixture. This ensures that every outfit you wear enhances your natural features.
Tonal Signature
If colour combinations feel outside your comfort zone, embrace a sophisticated tonal look instead. Layer different shades of the same colour for a refined and effortlessly chic aesthetic. Play with textures and fabrics to add depth and interest, think a cashmere camel sweater paired with tailored beige trousers. This approach keeps your outfit elegant and cohesive while maintaining a polished, understated style.
Accessorise
If black and neutrals are your go-to, elevate your look with statement accessories. This could be anything from jewellery - cuff bracelets are currently trending, but they are also a timeless and sophisticated choice. To standout bags, slim scarves also on trend and again also timeless, or colourful footwear. Find a signature piece that reflects your style and makes an impact.
The Best Fit
For women in all industries, be it creative, corporate, law or tech and beyond, knowing what suits your body-shape is key to striking the perfect balance between individuality and authority. Body shape knowledge enables you to make informed choices: For example, maybe you can wear oversized, but only if it fits flush to the shoulders, or shirts look better fully tucked in, rather than a half French tuck.
No matter your industry or career stage, dressing well isn’t about vanity - it’s about strategy. Style is a tool, and when used well, it can help open doors before you even say a word.
