Summer Styling
Nothing in a man’s wardrobe says summer like the Cuban shirt, also known as the revere, camp collar or resort shirt. This versatile garment first came to prominence in the 1950’s and then in the 60’s the style of shirt favoured by the late Sean Connery’s 007. In more recent decades though the Cuban shirt has been considered to be something of a marmite item, but like all things fashion its currently having another sartorial moment, which I fully endorse!
With a whole host of styles, fabrics and prints available the Cuban shirt can be styled in multiple ways, from smart to casual to sporty. Scroll down to see 4 looks encompassing this versatile shirt.
Cuban + Suit
The idea of wearing a Cuban shirt with a suit may be out of your comfort zone at first, but one you think about not just the stylish but practical aspects this goes out the window. Suits in summer are warm and stuffy, pairing a lighter colour suit with a fluid Cuban shirt and canvas/suede espadrilles makes for a cool effortlessly stylish look.
Cuban + White Tee + Chinos
Wearing your Cuban shirt over a tee, hits that smart but not to trying to hard look, which is great for summer dating. This look works best when worn with a simple clean (no branding) white tee underneath, as the white tee goes well with both printed and plain shirts. Whether you should tuck the tee in or leave out is all down to personal preference – though if leaving out, make sure your tee doesn’t hang below the shirt.
Cuban + Shorts
Shorts and a tee can look non-descript, shorts and a shirt too smart, shorts and a polo shirt depending on your style of shorts can look either too casual or too smart. A Cuban shirt and shorts say cool summer style. These shirts look best when they have the starring role, so avoid pairing with pockety combat styles. Add an elevated sandal for extra style points.
Cuban + Jeans
All Saints have definitely cornered the UK high street market on printed, somewhat grungy Cuban shirts. Ideal jeans to wear with are straight leg - I’d steer clear of slim jeans as this looks dated – in a mid-blue 90’s wash, with sporty but not too sporty trainers. The devil is in the detail!
